Journalist sentenced to 22 months imprisonment in Algeria
Algeria, Politics, 11/6/1997
The crisis between the Algerian government and the nation's intelligentsia was aggravated after a court sentence against famous journalist Omar Blushat, who was sentenced for 22 months of imprisonment.
People close to Blushat said that he appealed against the ruling, and it is expected that the ruling will be alleviated or abolished altogether.
Algerian journalists expressed their severe displeasure because they believe that Blushat did not write anything that would defame Algeria or the government and that his articles were only criticizing the government's policies and its treatment of terrorism.
But the government contends that he harmed Algerian national security and state. It is expected that the Algerian court will hold its hearings of the appeal at the end of this month.
