With Libya and Jordan connected, Abaza sees economic closeness
North Africa Region, Economics, 11/6/1997

Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Maher Abaza confirmed that the links among the countries of the Middle East will contribute to the economic closeness of these countries, will increase the electrical power available to each country, will open new horizons of cooperation in the field of electricity and will also decrease the pressure on the local networks.

He added that the first phase of the project connecting Egypt with Jordan, which is extended from Taba in Egypt to Aqaba in Jordan through 4 cables installed under the sea water with a 400 kilovolt capacity, will be finished before the end of the current year.

Abaza also said that the project connecting electricity between Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey will be finished by the end of next year, and that there is a possibility that Egypt will exchange electricity with Europe through Greece before the end of next year after the completion of the linking line between Italy and Greece.

Abaza said that the other project linking electricity between Egypt and Libya is expected to be completed before the end of this year, and will connect Egypt with the North African countries which are already linked with Libya.

He also stated that the meeting of the Ministers of Electricity of the Mediterranean countries next April in Italy will fix a date to connect Tunisia and Greece with Italy.
