Algerian president in Muscat today
Algeria-Oman, Politics, 11/6/1997

Algerian President Liamine Zeroual is in Oman today on a two-day official visit, the first there by an Algerian president. The visit came in response to an invitation by Sultan Qaboos Bin Said.

Algerian Diplomatic sources in Cairo said that President Zeroual and Sultan Qaboos will discuss the latest developments in the Middle East and the Gulf region, including the Iraqi dispute with the UN. The discussions will also tackle bilateral relations between the two countries in the political and economic fields in an attempt to boost the volume of the trade exchange between the two counties.

Arab sources following the situation in Algeria confirmed that President Zeroual has an extensive plan to remove all the obstacles to Algerian foreign relations, especially with the Arab countries. The sources added that this visit comes within the plan to strengthen Algeria's relations with the Gulf countries in an attempt to confront terrorism and to get the Arab countries' support in order not to make the Algerian crisis subject to the international intervention.

The sources expected that President Zeroual will make a European tour at the beginning of the coming year in a bid to clarify the situation in Algeria and to brief the European officials on the Algerian efforts to end terrorism in order to prevent it from moving to Europe.

President Zeroual had ended his visit to the UAE two days ago during which he met with Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
