Egypt wants permanent seat in Atomic Agency
Egypt, Economics, 11/5/1997
Egypt applied to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to supplement the only permanent seat allocated to Africa on the agency's board of trustees. Egypt is trying to win a permanent seat instead of using the rotation system among the African countries to decide who will occupy the only seat allocated to Africa.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Minister of Electricity Maher Abaza stated that the IAEA proposed to offer assistance to Egypt in making a comprehensive survey of energy sources in Egypt.
Abaza confirmed that a committee of IAEA experts will visit Cairo soon to make a comprehensive survey and to offer the necessary studies for developing the energy production from the sources that protect the environment.
Abaza also stated that Egypt had finished erecting the experimental nuclear reactor in Inshas whose operation will start beginning of next year.
