Moroccan minister of interior: no Islamic movements in legislative election
Morocco, Politics, 11/5/1997

Moroccan Minister of Interior Idris Al Basry stated that no Islamic party members were selected to participate in the upcoming legislative elections.

He said that the government does not care about the religious persuasions of the candidates, but it cares about their political persuasions. He added that all the parties participating in the Moroccan elections are legitimate and that there is no Islamic party in that election.

He stated that the Union and Renovation Organization reached an agreement with the Constitutional Popular Movement Party, which will allow the members of the former to participate in elections within a political party.

He also stated that the parliament will start its sessions immediately after the election of the Second Chamber, which means that it could start work as soon as mid December. He stressed the government's efforts to stop money from being used by some candidates and parties in the election by applying severe laws on them and on those who exceed the ceiling of money allowed to be used in the election campaign.

Al Basry stated that the Moroccan government welcomes any monitors sent by any non-governmental organization to watch the election, whatever their tendencies are. An American mission will meet with the heads of the political parties. A French anti-racial discrimination organization will also visit Morocco to monitor the election.
