Moroccan-Algerian relations improve despite obstacles
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 11/5/1997
In spite of the fact that the borders between Morocco and Algeria are closed and in spite of the Moroccan reactions towards the military exercises by the Algerian army some weeks ago in the West of Algeria which were described as provocative, the message sent by the Moroccan Monarch King Hassan II to Algerian President Liamine Zeroual in which he wished the Algerian people constant peace and progress came to prove that there are efforts at work to improve the two countries' relations.
Menawhile, appointing the former Minister of Information Mayhoub Al Mayhoub as Algeria's Ambassador in Rabat softened the fears that the relations between the two neighboring countries will deteriorate. Al Mayhouby is the first prominent personage to be appointed as Ambassador of Algeria in Morocco.
The capitals of the North African countries are busy trying to get Algerian-Moroccan relations back to normal, especially after the success of the efforts exerted by international mediator James Baker in the Sahara conflict.
