Bashir: Sudan ready for peace
Sudan, Politics, 11/4/1997
Sudanese leader Omar Bashir said yesterday that his country was ready for peace after more than 14 years of civil war.
Bashir, speaking for the first time since peace talks started on Thursday between his government and southern guerrillas, insisted however, that Khartoum would defend its federal nature and unity with force if necessary.
"Our preparations for the phase of peace will continue, God willing, economically, socially and politically," Bashir said in a speech at Khartoum's Friendship Hall overlooking the Nile river, Al Khartoum daily said today.
