UAE delegation in Baghdad
United Arab Emirates-Iraq, Economics, 11/4/1997

A UAE delegation headed by the director of the Dubai Customs Department, Ebeid Sakr Youssef, will pay a visit to Iraq to get acquainted with the needs of Iraq, which is under embargo since 1990. The delegation includes many private and public sector investors.

UAE sources stated that the delegation includes government officials from Dubai to study the possibility of providing Iraq with food and medicines within the oil-for-food agreement. The delegation will also try to follow up the implementation of a previously signed agreement between the Dubai Ports Authority and the Iraqi Ministry of Transportation through which a maritime line to move cargo and passengers between Dubai and the Iraqi ports on the Gulf will be opened.

Two companies from Dubai and Sharja had signed agreements with Iraqi companies last March to set up a shipping line. The UAE sent many ships loaded with medicines and food as a gift to the Iraqi people, and aid is being sent regularly to the Iraqi ports overlooking the Gulf.
