10 Jordanian Parties Boycott the Election
Jordan, Politics, 11/3/1997

The Muslim Brotherhood Organization, the Islamic Labor Front and 8 other left-wing and national parties declared that they will boycott the election to be held Tuesday in Jordan.

They stated that this decision was taken due to the violations committed by the government as it turned the role of the parliament into a marginal one and enacted temporary laws limiting freedoms and accelerating normalization with Israel.

The boycotting parties advocate a plan to annul the peace agreements which Jordan signed with Israel and to reconsider the laws of the election and press. They are also studying giving more rights to the parliament and preventing its role from being marginal.

The National Reform Powers said that government procedures in preparing for the election aimed to prove to the public that the boycott will fail and that the people will go to the balloting boxes in great numbers in preparation for declaring untrue results.

The National Reform Powers said that the government is in a dilemma and that it does not control the situation as it alleges, which is clear through the repetition of the names of candidates, issuing more than one voting card to the same voter and issuing cards to dead people.
