More pressure on Egyptian government against MENA
Egypt, Politics, 11/1/1997

The Egyptian opposition increased its pressure on the Egyptian government to declare its boycott of the Middle East-North Africa economic conference, which is due to be held in Qatar during this month.

The Head of the Tagamou leftist party, Khaled Mohy Al Din, called on Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa to declare Egypt's boycott of the MENA Conference. He said that Egypt's participation will be a reward to Israel for its aggressive policies.

Mohy Al Din said that during the previous economic conferences, including the one held in Cairo, Israel demonstrated its insistence on imposing its own view of settlement and peace which gives priority for economy over policy and stipulated that the Arabs should end their boycott to it before any political settlement could be reached in the Middle East.

He added that settlement negotiations had reached a deadlock due to the policies of the Likud party and the Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu. He clarified that Arab participation in the conference will encourage more Israeli aggression and violence. This participation will also defy the resolutions of the Arab League, which called on the Arab countries to stop all steps of normalization with Israel and to stop all kinds of dealings till it declares its acceptance of the Madrid agreement and the principle of land for peace.
