Somalian unity is our purpose
North Africa Region, Politics, 10/31/1997

A Somalian leader praised efforts by President Mubarak and the Egyptian government to secure national reconciliation in Somalia, a political daily paper said yesterday.

Hussein Fareh Adeed, the Somalian National Alliance's leader, told reporters after a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Amr Moussa that the interim Somalian government received support from Egypt along with other Arab and African states.

Adeed blamed "foreign interference" in the affairs of African states for civil war, stressing the Somali people's determination to solve their problems away from foreign powers.

"We're committed to reaching Somalian unity and maintaining Somali territorial integrity. We're committed to what we agreed upon in Cairo through the Cairo declaration that leads to this purpose," he said, Al Wafd daily said today.

Meanwhile, heavy rains in southern Somalia have killed 15 people and flooded scores of villages, residents said yesterday. They said heavier than usual rains caused the Juba river to burst its banks in parts of the country at the weekend, flooding fields and homes.

Some 30 houses were destroyed in Tiyeglow when a wave of water five feet high rushed through the village. Residents said 15 people were killed and many people fled their homes for larger towns, while others had been trapped in their villages because rains had washed away roads, Al Wafd reported.
