For the first time, Algeria accuses Europe of supporting terrorism
Algeria, Politics, 10/30/1997

For the first time in the history of the Algerian struggle, the Algerian regime accused Europe of assisting and supporting the terrorist groups.

Algerian Foreign Minister Bakhty Al Ayed accused European countries of assisting and financing what he called the terrorist groups. He added that these countries aim to undermine Algeria by offering these groups the money and arms they need and that these countries are trying to avenge Algeria but these attempts will not succeed.

He clarified that the phenomenon of violence which Algeria is passing through is a special kind of terrorism which has caused the death of thousands of innocent victims.

He stated that this phenomenon has started to disappear and shrink and that the Algerian authorities managed to control the security situation. He pointed out that the size of Algeria makes it difficult to end terrorism altogether and that this needs some time. The terrorists are now in remote areas from the capital and the security forces are still tracking them, he said.
