Protests in the streets against the results of election
Algeria, Politics, 10/30/1997

In an unprecedented escalation in the Algerian political arena, thousands of Algerians participated in marches to protest the results of the recent election. The marches went through the streets of the Algerian capital. The demonstrators accused the government of forging the results, repeated rumors and anti government slogans and requested the Algerian premier and the speaker of the parliament to resign.

The Socialist Powers Front called on holding marches to protest what it called forging the local election which was held last week that was won by the National Democratic Gathering Party, described as the presidential party. This victory roused the criticism of the opposition parties.

The National Liberation Front, the Peaceful Society Movement, and the Labor Party participated in the demonstrations. The Gathering Party for Culture and Democracy decided to hold daily demonstrations in front of its headquarters in the Algerian capital. Small groups of demonstrators gathered near the premises of the Algerian presidency.

Political commentators think that these demonstrations might be the first step of transferring the protests of the political parties to the Algerian streets. On the other hand, the Algerian Ministry of Interior confirmed that no accident was reported during the election and the National Democratic Gathering Party denied that it forged the election.
