Sahara self-rule referendum set for December 1998

ArabicNews.com learned that the suggested date of the referendum of the Sahara's self rule will be December 6, 1998. Sources close to the UN delegation in Al Oyoon, the capital of the Sahara provinces, said that this suggestion was delivered to the concerned parties while continuing the other procedures related to the referendum, such as determining the identity of those elegible to participate.
Sources expect that the delegation will continue its work until next May, after which the refugees will return, the prisoners will be released, and the fighting forces will be stationed in specified positions.
Morocco pledged its full cooperation with the UN in order to implement the Houston agreements. A mission of the Menoroso visited the Polisario centers in Tenedouf in order to study the possibility of opening new offices to register the people of Saharan origin.
A Moroccan ministerial delegation held a meeting with the Sheikhs of the Sahara tribes who are members of the Identity Determination Committee to urge them to show more cooperation in the processes.
