60 people detained and flogged in Sudan
Sudan, Local, 10/25/1997
Al Ittehadi Al Dawlia newspaper reported yesterday that the citizens in Al Gadid-Al Thawra threw stones at the governor of Khartoum and Minister of Interior Bakri Hassan Salih, who were compelled to flee from the area. Security forces sent to the area attacked the citizens and 60 were arrested and flogged after being kept in containers as a sort of humiliation.
Sources said that Mohamed Al-Amin El Musbah was hit by a bullet during the dispute, which took place after the authorities confiscated agricultural projects in the area for the setting up of a chemical plant. The citizens protested against this decision and submitted a memo to the authorities, Khartoum daily said today.
