A festival to celebrate end of Sphinx restoration
Egypt, History, 10/24/1997

An international festival will be held on 10 December on the occasion of finishing the restoration works of the Sphinx. The Egyptian Minister of Culture Farouk Hosny will hold meetings with a number of Foreign Ministers of Culture, Egyptologists and restoration experts during the coming days.

The final phase of restoration which have started 10 years ago are being finished in which modern technology was used to restore the statue to its previous condition when it was built by the Pharaohs.

The restoration project was under the supervision of an archeological and scientific team of Egyptian and international experts. The Ministery of Culture followed the restoration phases through visits to the statue during in order to avoid the mistakes done by previous teams. This time the repair team relied on 1816 pictures prior to clearing the site of sand accumulations.
