A bad start for Dennis Ross' visit
Palestine, Politics, 10/23/1997
The US special envoy to the peace process, Dennis Ross, did not achieve any success in his discussions with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The USA is exerting efforts to push the peace process forward in order to convince the Arab countries to participate in the MENA Conference which could be canceled because of the refusal of many Arab countries to participate in it.
The Israeli and Palestinian sides stated that no progress was achieved since the beginning of Ross' visit, as the Israeli prime minister insisted on continuing building the settlements on Abu Goneim.
Ross is facing the problem which was disclosed by Palestinian sources that the Israeli government ratified a settlement plan to build 10,000 houses south of Jerusalem. The Israeli Prime Minister siad before Ross started his visit that he would not stop Israel's settlement plans.
The Palestinian expert on Israeli settlement affairs who disclosed the new Israeli settlement plan confirmed that the new plan aims to set up the new settlement called the City of Gardens to complete the settlement belt around Jerusalem and to extend the settlement activities.
