Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, and Turkey to meet in Islamic Summit

The Egyptian Assistant To Foreign Minister for Multilateral Relations Ambassador Sayed Qassem stated that Egypt received today a formal invitation to attend the ministerial meetings of some of the Islamic countries in Rabat on 28/9 October. The invitation was sent by the Moroccan Monarch King Hassan II as he is the head of the current Islamic summit.

The meetings will discuss the difficult circumstances faced by the Islamic Conference Organization (ICO) and the attempts to make it play a more active role.

Qassem mentioned that the idea of holding such meetings was suggested by President Hosny Mubarak in order to give the Islamic countries the chance to discuss the problems of the organization.

He added that the countries which will be invited together with Egypt which has a political, cultural, and Islamic influence, are Saudi Arabia and Morocco, the hosting country in addition to the three countries which head the permanent committees of the Organization; Turkey that heads the Economic Committee, Pakistan that heads the Technological and Scientific Committee, and Senegal that heads the Cultural Committee. Indonesia, the current chair of the Organization will be also invited together with Iran which will host the upcoming meetings of the Organization. Some of the wealthy countries will also attend the meetings like Kuwait and Brunei.

Qassem will head the Egyptian delegation in these meetings as the Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa will be busy with the visit of the Russian Foreign Minister Yevegeni Premakov.
