Mass resignations in Moroccan opposition party
Morocco, Politics, 10/22/1997
Members of the Moroccan Opposition Socialist Party (MOSP) confirmed that members and supporters of an organizing body in the city of Sala south of the capital, Rabat, submitted their mass resignation in protest to what they described as selection of unqualified candidates to represent the party in upcoming legislative elections.
A leaflet--a copy of which was obtained by ArabicNews.com--stated that the MOSP leadership selected candidates who are unqualified and around whom there are many doubts.
The internal affairs of many of the opposition parties witness increased tensions as a result of the process of candidates' selection, especially as doubts get stronger regarding the possibility that the opposition parties will participate in the election with joint representatives.
Meanwhile, the Moroccan opposition party leaders said that any round of elections is preceded by much protest due to struggles between individuals, that have nothing to do with politics.
The MOSP sent messages to local organizations in which it encouraged them to select candidates according to specific criteria, which ruled out the possibility of participating in the election with joint candidates, enabling the Socialist and Independence parties to occupy more seats than in the previous legislative election.
