Trial for an Iraqi who illegally acquired $12 million in Sudan
Sudan, Judicial, 10/22/1997

The Sudanese authorities referred an Iraqi businessman to trial after he was charged with illegally acquiring $12 million from Sudanese banks.

Iraqi businessman Abdel Latif Hassan Mahdy, known as Sakr Quraish, acquired this money with the help of seven Sudanese who were also referred to trial. Among the seven are high-ranking officials in the Islamic West Bank and businessmen. The case has become known in Sudan as "The Entangled Checks" and was discovered by the Sudanese authorities at the beginning of October.

Mahdy had entered in negotiations with the Sudanese government to pay the money on an installment basis, but he failed to prove his commitment after some months, which necessitated filing a case against him.
