Hamas detainees suspend their hunger strike
Palestine, Local, 10/21/1997
A number of Hamas members and activists held in Palestinian jails in Gaza have suspended their hunger strike after receiving a commitment from the Palestinian National Authority that they would be released soon, said Abdul Aziz Rantisi, Hamas spokesman in Gaza.
He added that Hamas detainees, who started their hunger strike on October 13, met with officials from the PNA and were promised release very soon. However, Rantisi added, Hamas prisoners "are determined to renew their hunger strike if the PNA does not honor its promise to release them within the next few days.² The detainees gave a ten-day period to see the PNA promise fulfilled. A Palestinian security source, meanwhile, said the release will not include those detained after the two recent suicide attacks in Jerusalem, which caused the killing of 21 Israelis.
