Many Lebanese still in Israeli jails
Lebanon, Politics, 10/21/1997

Reports from the occupied Arab lands have affirmed that Israeli occupation authorities are still detaining a large number of Lebanese citizens in their jails despite of the expiration of some of the detainees' sentences and lack of a trial for others.

Chairman of the Nazareth-based Society of Friends of the Detainees and Prisoners, Ahmad Habibullah, said the Israeli authorities have over one year barred the Society's delegates and lawyers from visiting Lebanese prisoners and turned down all applications presented by the society to enter and supply materials such as clothes and shoes.

Mr. Habibullah said that the prisoners are living very difficult health conditions and are suffering from the practices of Israeli jails which bluntly defy international norms and charters.

According to the society's information, 35 Lebanese prisoners are detained at four Israeli jails, foremost of which being Sheilkh Abdul Karim Obeid, Mustafa al Deirani, and Hussien Mohammed Mekdad.
