New 4 tombs in Giza, Egypt
Egypt, History, 10/21/1997
Egypt will open to tourists next month four tombs that lay under a mound of sand near the Great pyramids of Giza for 4,600 years until they were discovered in the 1930s, an official said on Thursday.
Dr. Zahi Hawans, the director of Giza Antiquities Authority, said the tombs belonged to officials who served the pharaoh Cheops, who built the biggest pyramid at Giza.
"These tombs were found 60 years ago but never opened to the public, they were neglected for years," Hawans said.
"People will look with one eye to the pyramid but the eye will see the marvelous conservation work that we did in the opening of those tombs," he told reporters and Reuters television.
The tombs show scenes from the daily life of Egyptian at the period of the 5th dynasty, including what Hawans said was a unique wall painting a man holding a hoopoe bird, Al Ahram daily said today.
