Egypt, Politics, 10/21/1997

Sheikh Abdul Rahman's wife, Aisha Abdul Rahman, who lives in Egypt requested that the USA release her husband who is serving a life sentence in a US prisons like Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, who was released recently by the Israeli Authorities.

The Sheikh's lawyer, Al Muntaser Al Zayat, said that the defending body of Omar Abdul Rahaman will request the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to ask the US administration to release the Sheikh, as he is an Egyptian citizen and as an Islamic scholar.

Al Zayat said that the defending body is preparing a file about the health condition of the Sheikh and the hard measures taken against him by the prison administration like putting him in solitary cell. Al Zayat added that contacts are underway with the defending body in the USA, which is headed by Ramsay Clark.

The Sheikh's wife appealed to international human rights organizations to pressure the US administration to release her husband. She said that while the US claims to protect human rights in all the countries of the world, it ignores them on its own territories.
