Algeria sets up security offices in ministries and government institutions
Algeria, Politics, 10/20/1997
The Algerian Government has begun implementing security measures to protect government institutions. The Algerian Cabinet decided to start these measures after the Interior Minister Moustafa Bin Mansour submitted a new proposal for the security plan to the Cabinet.
The proposal called on the government institutions to set up internal security offices to protect these institutions. These security offices will be under the supervision of retired officers. A central security office at the Ministry of Interior will be responsible for the coordination between these offices.
The security measures come hours before the ending of campaigns for the municipal elections which started at the beginning of the current month and in which four parties participated, three of which represent the ruling coalition.
The security measures will reach their peak during the balloting rounds on October 23, as some markets will be closed, especially the weekly car markets. The trucks and the cargo-transferring means of transportation will be prohibited from parking on streets on which there will be balloting centers.
Meanwhile, voting in the elections has already begun in remote villages in which mobile polling stations are used.
