UN delegation ends visit to Morocco
Morocco-West Sahara, Politics, 10/18/1997

A UN commission today ended its week long visit to Morocco, which focused on identifying the necessary measures required for the deployment of the Menoroso delegation, responsible for overseeing the Western Sahara ceasefire and holding the referendum before the end of the year.

The head of the commission Mrs. Louise La Sert who is working in the peacekeeping operations in the United Nations said that refugee committee members who accompanied the UN delegation had long discussions with the Menoroso delegation in the area of Al Oyoon and visited some other areas in addition to the headquarters of the Polisario in Tendouf.

The commission discussed means of resuming the works of the UN committee, which is responsible for the determination of identity and the census of the people of Sahara origin, according to the criteria defined by the UN. This responsibility has been always difficult to deal with and it has obstructed achieving any progress toward holding the referendum.

The Foreign Relations Committee in the US Congress approved a decision to support the mission of the international mediator, the former US Secretary of State James Baker, which aims to hold a free referendum in order to end the struggle that has been going on since 1975.
