Israel attacked the encampment of a pro-Syrian Palestinian group in Lebanon, using jets to raid the pro-Syrian Popular Front's position on Naameh hill, according to a Nando Times report. Go

A British citizen was abducted in the latest instance of kidnapping in Yemen, while four French citizens were released in a separate incident there, CNN reported. The four were unharmed. Go

Israel issued administration detention orders against seven more Palestinians from the West Bank, bringing the total number of those held in Israeli jails without trial or charges up to 854, Palestinian sources said. They added that apart from administrative detainees, Israel still holds some 3,400 Palestinians behind bars though according to the Oslo Agreements, all had been entitled to be released more than a year ago. The Palestinian economy has suffered a major blow because of Israel's continued closure of the PNA areas, said Abdul Aziz Shahin, minister of food supplies in the PNA. Shahin said the total damage caused to the Palestinians since the beginning of this year is approximately US $230 million, at a daily rate of $6 million. Shahin added the closure and the tight siege Israel imposed on the PNA was aimed at provoking the Palestinians against the PNA and at blackmailing the Palestinians into accepting Israeli plots. Shahin was speaking in a lecture held in Gaza Thursday. Go

Israel has sent a message to Lebanon, through the International Committee of the Red Cross, saying that it is ready to exchange Hizbullah prisoners for the body of a commando slain in a failed September raid on an Amal base in Ansariyeh, according to Israel's Haaretz newpaper. Go

Illegal workers, trying to meet the Saudi amnesty deadline which expired yesterday, filled flights out of Saudi Arabia in an effort to avoid legal actions as a result of overstaying their passport term, according to a Bahrain Tribune report. Go

Ten Jewish residents of Jerusalem are being held by Israel for allegedly selling explosives to Palestinians for use in terrorist attacks, according to a London Times report. Go

Iraq said that it will stop cooperating with UN weapons inspections if further sanctions are imposed against it by the UN Security Council, according to a New York Times report. The UNSC was considering adding sanctions because of a report which alleged Iraqi obstruction of recent inspections. Go

The US has dropped the "contingency" designation from funding for troops in the Gulf area, a sign of a long-term military commitment in the region, the Detroit News reported. Go

South African President Nelson Mandela will visit Libya next week in spite of US criticism of the visit. Manedla will meet with Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi after traveling by land to Tripoli from Tunisia, according to a Voice of America report. Go

The election of Bahrain to a seat on the United Nations Security Council for the coming two years was a recognition of its international role. Bahrain was elected on October 16 as a member of the United Nations Security Council for 1998 and 1999. Go

A fire in the woods of Arsoun and Kernayel, upper Mettn, was extinguished by the Lebanese Army, security forces and civil defense units in Antelias and Showaifat. Civil defense authorities said the fire was sparked by high temperatures. Go
