Shafi says Palestinian Council is undemocratic as he resigns

Former chief Palestinian negotiator Dr. Haidar Abdul Shafi insisted on his resignation from the Palestinian Legislative Council and said he wanted the Palestinians who voted in the elections for the current PLC to know "how impotent those members are and how the PLC cannot be blamed for what is taking place, neither socially nor politically."

Shafi, who headed the Palestinian peace talks delegation to the Madrid Conference in 1993, urged the PNA to adopt more democratic means in its relations with the Palestinian people. "We are facing huge challenges with Israel's military superiority that enables her to usurp more Arab Palestinian land and violate more of the Palestinian rights. Therefore we are badly in need for a united Palestinian stand that can design our way of facing those challenges," wrote Shafi in his letter of resignation.

PLC members have rejected the resignation and called on Shafi to remain in his position. Talks are still going on between the two parties to decide Shafi's future membership in the PLC.
