Settlers' actions cause tension in Hebron
Palestine, Local, 10/17/1997
Tensions rose in Hebron when Jewish settlers living in the heart of the West Bank city were involved in attacks on Palestinian youths living in the same area. Palestinian sources said settlers have lately harassed many Palestinians as they walked by the city center, still under Israeli military occupation.
Baruch Marzel, a leader of an extreme right wing settler group who lives in the Jewish settlement in Hebron, reportedly hit an elderly Palestinian man with a baton he held in his hand, and none of the Israeli soldiers who were around tried to stop him, the sources said. They noted that the continued provocation by the settlers might lead to open confrontation between the Palestinians and the settlers.
