Kuwaiti-Russian ties deep-rooted
Kuwait, Politics, 10/16/1997
A senior Russian parliamentarian said on October 15 that Kuwait is a "strategic and traditional partner" of Moscow, and that bilateral ties with his country are deep-rooted in the Gulf area.
These remarks were voiced by the deputy Speaker of the Russian Federal Council, Igor Lakhov, during a meeting in Moscow on October 15 with the Kuwaiti Parliamentary delegation headed by the National Assembly's deputy speaker Tala Al Ayyar.
Lakhov asserted the strategic significance of the Gulf area, while calling for the establishment of a security group based on joint interests among countries of the area and restoration of peaceful means to resolve outstanding issues among these countries.
"There is no change in Russia's position on Iraq's implementation of all security council resolutions related to its invasion of Kuwait in August 1990," Lakhov said
He said that among our priorities is to call on Iraq to release all POWs still being detained in Iraqi jails, since it's a humanitarian issue, in addition to returning all stolen Kuwaiti properties and documents during the occupation.
Meanwhile, Lakhov hailed Kuwait's approval to grant his country a loan of $60 million US for the renovation of the northern Russian port of Murmansk.
