Israeli nuclear reactor endangers neighboring countries, Arab League reports
Regional, Politics, 10/15/1997
A report recently issued by the Arab League said that the countries south and east of the Mediterranean face great problems caused by the Israeli nuclear reactors.
Israel has the Daimona nuclear reactor in the Naqb desert in addition to ten other nuclear reactors, 5 of which are near the Mediterranean and which have never been inspected by any international organization. The radiant waste of these reactors is dumped in the seas of the Arab countries.
The report stated that the Arab countries face four additional dangers: the constant increase of the size of the deserts, destruction of sea resources, pollution of river and sea waters, and illegal fishing, in addition to the problem of the sewage system.
The Arab world lies in a semi-dry area where the arable lands deteriorate due to many factors, on top of which are pollution and the increase in the rate of saltiness which is caused by the lack of a drainage system.
However, the Arab world possesses thousands of miles of coasts containing fish resources. The Japanese fishing fleets get the biggest share of the fish off the Yemeni coast, and the Spanish and European fleets fish in an unjust way off the Moroccan coasts, according to the report.
