Gulf summit in Kuwait to draw up future plans for Gulf
Gulf Region, Politics, 10/15/1997

The Gulf Summit, due to be held next December in Kuwait, will discuss an important document which contains the goals and strategies of the development plans in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. It will also draw up the future guidelines of development in the Council countries.

The Ministers of Planning and development in the GCC countries will hold their meetings on 22-23 October in Doha to revise this document in preparation for submitting it to the summit.

The secretariat general of the council finished preparing the draft document, which was submitted to the six member countries. The six countries' comments on this draft, which will be discussed during the meeting in Doha, were sent to the secretariat general.

The document includes the views of the six countries regarding the future guidelines for development in the Gulf countries, goals, policies, national development plans, and executive procedures adopted for the implementation of the document.

Saudi Arabia stressed the importance of establishing the Gulf Common Market in which all barriers and obstacles are removed in order to apply the Unified Economic Agreement. It also stressed the importance of supporting the private sector in the Gulf countries in order to strengthen its vital role in the development plans, in addition to increasing the dependence on the national manpower.
