Israeli warplanes blast Hizbullah radio station in eastern Lebanon
Lebanon, Politics, 10/14/1997

Israeli fighter-bombers on Tuesday blasted a Hizbullah radio station in eastern Lebanon's Bekaa valley, a few hours after guerrillas wounded two Israeli soldiers in south Lebanon, Lebanese security sources said.

Two Israeli warplanes fired four air-to-surface rockets at the radio transmitter near the village of Junta, just five kilometers west of the Syrian border. There were no reports of casualties from the air assault, the second on the guerrilla station since February.

The sources said the transmitter for the Voice of the Oppressed radio station was completely destroyed but added that broadcasts continued uninterrupted using other transmitters in the area.

The Israeli air raid was apparently in retaliation for a series of guerrilla attacks launched early Tuesday on Israeli positions in south Lebanon. Hizbullah, or Party of God, said its fighters fired rockets and machine guns at military outposts manned by Israeli troops and their South Lebanon Army militia allies on the edge of an Israeli-occupied enclave in south Lebanon.

Two Israeli soldiers were lightly wounded in the attacks. A Hizbullah statement said an Israeli Merkava tank was hit on a road near the Dabsheh outpost in the occupied enclave.
Israel and its south Lebanon militia allies hit back with artillery fire aimed at suspected guerrilla strongholds facing the enclave, the security sources said. There were no casualties from the retaliatory fire.

Israel has occupied a border strip in the south since 1985 to protect its northern region from cross-border guerrilla raids. Hizbullah has been leading a campaign to force the 1,500 Israeli troops and 2,500 allied militiamen from the enclave.
