Aida starts tomorrow as more tourists vacation in Egypt

At 7 o¹clock tomorrow evening, Luxor will witness the first show of Opera Aida in 1997 at the plateau of the Temple of Hastshepsute celebrating the 125 anniversary of the first presentation of this opera in Egypt. The shows will continue till Friday.

A book was published containing documents and rare pictures of the first presentation of Opera Aida in 1871 which was produced to celebrate the inauguration of the Suez Canal in the era of Khediv Ismail. It also contains important information about all the presentations of Opera Aida in Egypt since the end of the 1980s. In addition to this, the book contains information about the presentations of Opera Aida in some of the cities of the world. Editions of the book were issued in different languages; Arabic, English, and French. Some documents were also published in hieroglyphic and Italian.

250 orchestra members and a choir consisting of more than 120 singers together with 600 group actors will participate in the shows. Many dignitaries from all over the world will attend tomorrow¹s show.

In a realted issue, the latest statistics issued by the Ministry of Tourism on the number of tourists shows that the month of August witnessed the biggest tourist influx to Egypt. 444 thousand tourists visited Egypt in August with a 15 % increase compared to the same period last year. The tourist nights increased by about 23 %.

The groups coming from Europe increased by 25 %, from the two Americas by 10 %, from the Middle East by 4.7 %, from South East Asia by ,02 %. The tension in the Palestinian occupied territories resulted in a decrease of the number of tourists coming from Israel by 18 %.

2.4 million tourists between August 1996 and June 1997 generated $ 1.845 Billion in revenues
