New crackdown on alcohol in UAE
United Arab Emirates, Local, 10/10/1997
In a new crackdown on the illegal alcohol trade, Emirati authorities seized over the past few months thousands of liquor bottles from houses and shops.
8,000 bottles of whisky and 2,000 cans of beer seized by authorities were crammed into a furnace and set ablaze this week in the municipality of Al Ain, east of the capital, Abu Dhabi.
Alcohol is banned in the United Arab Emirates, but non-muslims can consume liquor in licensed shops and hotels.
