Saudi Arabia, Science, 10/10/1997

More than 300 geologists will take part in the fourth annual conference of Saudi Society of Earth Science (SSES) which opens on October 13, a spokesman for the society said.

The three-day conference will be inaugurated by Makkah governor Prince Majed. Some 23 research papers will be read at the conference, which will be held in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, society spokesman Shaker al Rifai said.

"The aim of the meeting is to discuss the geology of the kingdom. It will review the current state of earth sciences and related technologies," Al Rifai said.

Six workshops will be held on the first day of the meeting. Topics are to include geographic information systems, remote sensing in mineral exploration, geophysical techniques, global positioning system, geostatistics and technical report writing.
