Syrian to Jordan: You will bear a heavy price if you play with dam
Syria, Economics, 10/9/1997

The Syrian-Jordanian Yarmouk River Water Committee will start its meetings in Amman tomorrow which will last for five days . Syria is still waiting for the Iraqi response regarding the Syrian suggestion to hold meetings of the Syrian-Iraqi Water Committee on 14 October.

The Syrian side will be headed tomorrow by the director of agreements in the Syrian foreign ministry Amin Asper while the Jordanian side will be headed by the director of the Office of International Water in the Jordanian Ministry of Irrigation Eng. Abdel Aziz Al Masry.

The meeting will study three main topics; treating the salty water which is driven onto the borders between the two countries, following up the implementation of the Wehda Dam project which was signed in 1987, and also checking the authenticity of the news of the implementation of a Jordanian-Israeli dam in the Hama area which Syria requests Israel to give back.

Sources clarified that Syria wants to make sure that Jordan refuses to implement the project of moving the dam which is in the area of Adsia to Hama, Jordan previously refuted the existence of such an agreement with Israel.

The Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Al Sharaa mentioned that if Syria knew for sure that Jordan is involved in the game of moving the dam from the area of Adsia to the area of Hama, Amman will have to bear great consequences.
