Israelis attack Azam Azam's Egyptian lawyer
Egypt, Politics, 10/9/1997

A number of Israelis attacked Egyptian lawyer Farid Al Dib in his office and insulted him after he failed in to win acquittal for convicted Israeli spy Azam Azam, who was sentenced for 15 years in jail in Egypt.

Egyptian Police intervened and arrested the Israelis who attacked the Egyptian lawyer; they also decided to close the lawyer's office till the end of the interrogations.

Farid Al Dib agreed to defend Azam in the case, which was a focus of interest for both the Egyptian and the Israeli peoples. The case has led to a crisis in the relations between the two countries after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu severely criticized the Egyptian judiciary system for sentencing Azam Azam.

Israel exercised great pressures on the Egyptian government to release Azam, but these pressures failed to persuade the Egyptian government to release him.

Dib was subjected to great pressures from his colleagues to drop the case, but he insisted on going on. The lawyer's colleagues said that Dib could collect L.E. 2 million in fees for his efforts.

The lawyers syndicate ended this dispute between the lawyers, as it declared that all lawyers are free to defend any suspect whose trial is before an Egyptian court, whatever his charges are.
