Joint maneuvers between Morocco and Spain
Morocco, Politics, 10/8/1997
Spain and Morocco started joint military maneuvers today on the border of Casablanca, south of Spain. The maneuvers aim to develop the coordination between the two countries within the friendship agreement signed by the two sides in 1991.
The agreement includes exchanging experiences and cooperating in the military field. These maneuvers are the biggest in the history of the two countries, coming at a time when the differences between the two have increased over the cities of Sebta and Milila occupied by Spain.
The maneuvers that occurred before were held on the shores of the two cities and were limited to the land and air forces. But the current maneuvers include the naval forces as well within training for the Moroccan naval forces comprising more than 6 thousand men, military ships, and a submarine.
The Moroccan government had differences with the European Union over the problem of Sebta and Milila and put the responsibility of liberating the two cities on the European Union. Morocco declared that the economic and trade cooperation together with liberating the two cities are necessary for establishing stability in the region.
