Near disaster due to fishermen using dynamite averted
Lebanon, Local, 10/8/1997

A Lebanese patrol from a southern detachment arrested three brothers from the Ghaddar family at dawn on October 7 after they were stopped for illegally fishing with dynamite near the Zahrani coast.

The three men were caught in an area where underwater pipes are used to transfer some 800 cubic meter of fuel oil to the energy plant in Zahrani. Diving experts said underwater explosions could have caused a disaster.

Security reports said the brothers had previously been caught fishing with dynamite, which is used to stun fish, sending them floating to the surface.

A patrol from the Zahrani detachment secretly followed the three brothers with a speedboat about midnight on October 6 and arrested them after a chase in which they tried to escape.

The men were handed over to the public prosecution and the judicial authorities to face trial.
