Militant Al Gamaa Al Islamya on trial
Egypt, Judicial, 10/7/1997

The State Security Higher Court in Egypt will hold its hearing today on the case in which "Egyptians coming back from Sudan and Afghanistan" were convicted.

Judges will listen to the defense in the case, in which 22 members of the military group of Al Gamaa Al Islamya were convicted. The most notable of those is Moustafa Hamza, who was convicted on several counts, one of which was related to an attempt to assassinate the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Addis Abbaba in June 1995.

The prosecutors will also recite the charges against the convicted--in particular Hamza--who have been allegedly masterminding all the military operations of Al Gamaa Al Islamya since 1992.

Moustafa Hamza was sentenced in absentia in 1992 in the case known as the "Egyptians coming back from Afghanistan." He is accused of training of members of the Gamaa Al Islamya and sending them into Egypt to destroy the Egyptian economy through terrorist activities and through a series of assassinations.
