Yemeni opposition parties discuss higher committee of election
Yemen, Politics, 10/7/1997
The legal period allowed by the Yemeni constitution for the election of the Higher Committee of Election is about to end. Opposition parties will hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss this issue.
According to the constitution, the parliament should elect a new committee within six months after the election. The recent election was held on April 27, but parliament has not yet held theirs. The issue of the committee was not on the parliament's agenda in any of its previous sessions, and it is not on the agenda of the upcoming sessions.
The opposition meeting is expected to be attended by the Yemeni Communist Party, the Nasserist Unionist Organization, the Party of Truth, the National Party of the Resurrection, and the People's Forces Party. It is not improbable that the right wing Reform Party will be invited, though it is headed by Sheikh Abdalla Hussein who is the speaker of the parliament.
