Syrian denies armor deployment on Turkey border
Syria, Military, 10/6/1997
Syria yesterday denied a Turkish report that it was mobilizing its forces on the border with Turkey. "These reports are fabricated and baseless," an official Syrian spokesman said in a statement.
A Turkish army official said that Iranian and Syrian troops had massed near a Kurdish enclave in northern Iraq in an apparent response to a Turkish military offensive against rebel Kurds in the area. He added that it cannot be said that Turkey is in danger.
Earlier on last Friday, Turkey's semi-official Anatolian news agency said Syrian armored units had built up near a triangle of territory where Syrian , Turkey and northern Iraq meet, Al Wafd reported today.
