Algeria, Military, 10/6/1997

An Algerian paper reported yesterday that terrorists slaughtered at least 88 people, many of them women and children, over past the last three days.

This massacre came days after a cease-fire called by the commander of Islamic Salvation Army (AIS) to expose the rival armed Islamic group (GIA) whom he blamed for "extreme barbarity" against civilians.

The Algerian La Tribune newspaper said 30 terrorists killed 38 people including 15 children overnight Thursday - Friday in Melaha village in Blida province, 30 miles south of Algiers.

Two woman were seriously wounded and two other women were kidnapped by the attackers who planted mines in the area to kill or wound security forces and rescue workers rushing to the scene, Al Ahram reported today.
