Privatization includes 88 Institutions in Tunisia
Tunisia, Economics, 10/3/1997

Tunisian Minister of State Monsif Bin Abdalla, who is responsible for reforming the public sector institutions, declared that Tunisia has privatized 88 public sector institutions since the beginning of the privatization plan at the end of the 1980s.

The revenues from the privatization process are $350 million dinars
($310 million). Among the establishments that were privatized are hotels, food factories, transportation services companies, trade establishments, and construction supplies factories.

The government intends to continue privatizing establishments working in competitive fields out of its belief that the public sector should not get involved in competition with the private sector, which is able now to provide for the needs of the country in the ordinary industrial sectors like clothes and shoes making.

The Tunisian government is trying to get the private sector to enter into strategic projects. An agreement was reached between an American group and the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company to implement a new power station in the southern province of the Tunisian capital in addition to some other projects that would connect roads between Tunisia and Algeria on the north side, and Libya on the south side.
