US retreats from restarting embassy in Sudan
Sudan, International, 10/2/1997
The US administration retreated yesterday from its announcement that it would send American diplomats back to Sudan, from which they were withdrawn 19 months ago out of fears for their safety, Al Ahrar daily said today.
State Department spokesman James Rubin told reporters last week's statement had been premature, adding that, "Any final decision on this issue needs to be taken in the context of the ongoing congressional action on Sudan."
