Spanish-Moroccan timetable for Sebta and Melila
Morocco, Local, 10/2/1997

Moroccan members of the Islamic Committee in the city of Melila lying in the north of Morocco and occupied by Spain expressed their displeasure regarding the equivocation of the Spanish authorities in applying the plan to include Islamic education in the city's curriculums.

Press sources in the city of Melila stated that the Islamic Committee distributed leaflets in which it clarifies its stance toward the Spanish authorities' slackness and requests the committee members to find other means to counter the Spanish pressures.

There are many arguments in both Morocco and Spain regarding the future of the cities of Sebta and Melila. The Spanish Representative to the UN said that the two cities are Spanish and their people are represented in the Spanish Parliament and have the same rights and obligations as all Spanish citizens. He added that the case of the two cities can not be compared to similar cases as this case has a unique nature.

The Spanish Representative to the UN gave this statement in response to the statement of the Moroccan Prime Minister Abel Latif Al Filaly, who asked the Spanish authorities to enter into direct negotiations with Morocco to get the two cities under the Moroccan sovereignty while maintaining the economic and trade interests of Spain.
