Sudan forsees imminent Eritrean offensive
Sudan, Military, 10/2/1997

A spokesman for the Sudanese army, Lieutenant General Mohammed Al Senousy warned of an imminent Eritrean offensive against the Sudanese territories through the eastern borders between the two countries.

Al Senousy strongly denied the news that the Sudanese forces carried out an offensive against the Eritrean territories, and asserted that the Sudanese army has the right to respond by all the legitimate means to any aggression against Sudan.

The Sudanese official said that the news about a Sudanese offensive always precedes an Eritrean offensive against Sudan. He stated that the Eritrean forces on the eastern borders of Sudan prove that Eritrea is preparing for an attack against Sudan.

He criticized Egyptian practices against the Sudanese existence in the border city of Halaib of which Sudan and Egypt are asserting possession rights. He added that the Egyptian authorities continue to ignore the existence of the Sudanese people in the area in order to force them to get out of it. He elaborated that Egypt is trying to carry out extensive procedures to change the nature of the area in order to impose the policy of the status quo.

An Egyptian source stated that Halaib is a 100% Egyptian territory and that Sudan should not talk about any affairs concerning it.
