Pope Shenouda III rejects foreign intervention in Copts' affairs
Egypt, Religion, 10/2/1997
Pope Shenouda III, the Patriarch of the Orthodox Copts of Egypt, the Middle East and Africa returned to Cairo after his tour of Britain, the USA, Canada, and Germany. In this tour he celebrated the opening of Coptic churches and met with Egyptian expatriates.
He also participated in the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the first Egyptian church (Mari Morcos) in Canada. The Pope also chaired a meeting of priests in Germany, and received Egypt's ambassadors to Britain, US, Canada, and Germany.
The Coptic newspaper Watany reported that Pope Shenouda III, in his meetings with the Egyptian expatriates, asserted that the Coptic church rejects any foreign intervention in the relation between the Egyptian government and the Copts. The Pope said that the stances of some members of the US Congress to enact laws in this concern are being initiated without consultation with the Coptic church.
The Pope described these stances as biased against Egypt, reiterating that protecting Egypt's reputation abroad is the duty of all Egyptian expatriates and that Egypt is not a country in which we live but it is a country living in us.
