Syrian president reviews latest developments with Yemeni parliament speaker
Syria-Yemen, Politics, 10/1/1997
Syrian President Hafez Al Assad received on September 30 the speaker of Yemen's parliament Abdullah Bin Hussien Al Ahmer, and the accompanying delegation. Talks centered on developments in the region, the Arab situations and Syrian-Yemeni ties.
Al Ahmer expressed satisfaction over talks conducted in Damascus, and confidence that the outcome of talks will have a useful impact on people in the two countries.
On his country's attitude towards normalization with Israel, Al Ahmer said any dealing with Israel is a sell-out of Arab rights so long as Israel occupies parts of Arab countries.
About Turkey's new aggression in Iraqi territories Al Ahmer said, "Had the Arabs been consolidated, Turkey would not have entered north Iraq, and Israel would not have gone to extremes in building further settlements and displacing indigenous Palestinians."
On a Yemen-Eritrea dispute over Red Sea islands, Al Ahmer said, "The case was submitted to international arbitrators, and it will be in our favor because the islands are natively Yemeni."
About reconciliation in Somalia, al Ahmer stressed that his country is sparing no efforts to maintain peace among factions in Somalia.
